Sass Second - NPHS April/May News

I hope you enjoyed Spring Break even though the weather didn’t seem very spring like!  This newsletter has a lot of information, so please take time to read through it and don’t hesitate to call or email if you have any questions.

We are already planning for next school year!  Please take a few minutes to complete this short survey for our Leadership Team to work to improve NPHS.
NPHS Safe & Collaborative Environment Parent Survey

Our Career Day was a success.  We appreciate all of the community members who took time to share their careers with our students.  This was a great opportunity for our students to explore career choices of their interest. We really appreciate the parents who encouraged their students to explore the careers and take the afternoon to learn from our community members.

Summer School information is available for all students.  This is an excellent opportunity to make up credits to stay on track to graduate.  Summer School will run from May 30th until June 14th from 7:30-11:30 am CST. To find the application, go to the NPHS website and click on INFO -- the application is located in the Document library.   Please contact the office if you have any questions. Applications are due April 30th.

NPHS welcomes Ben Bachmann as our new Athletic Director.  Please click the link below to learn more about Ben.

Renovation Update:  The Math, Special Education, and Spanish Departments moved into their new areas.  Students and staff have had a lot of positive comments. We have vacated five classrooms for safety as they continue to work on the theater addition. In the next couple weeks, Ag, FACS, Business, and Art will be moving into their new spaces.  Our weight room was cleared out to make way for the demolition of the new space.

Over the summer there will be a lot of work being completed, which means our building will be a bit messy!  The following areas are set to have work being completed: cafeteria, large gym, new Science classrooms, Industrial Tech classrooms, Robotics, Construction Trades, and Special Education classrooms to name a few!  We are excited to see what next fall will look like for our students!

The ISTEP+ Part 2 is just around the corner!  All sophomores and junior retesters will be tested on April 17-20  for Part 2.  Passing  the ISTEP+ is a graduation requirement.  We will continue to prepare a “well rounded” young adult having the skills to be successful beyond high school and meeting this state-mandated benchmark is one step closer!  Please take time to discuss the importance of this test with your student.

ISTEP ECA Retesters-All seniors who have not passed the Algebra 1 and/or English 10 state requirement will be tested on May 1st and 2nd.  This is a graduation requirement to receive their diplomas.

Prom will be May 5th, and students must have 90% attendance to attend the dance.  There are guest permission slip forms in the main office. Prom will be held at Heston Hills and dinner will be served this year.

Reminder to seniors:  You must be passing ALL graduation required courses on May 23, 2018, to participate in our graduation ceremony on June 3, 2018.

On May 23rd, we will be having a Senior Awards Ceremony at 8:45 am CST.  All senior parents are invited to attend. The remainder of the day will be filled with special events for our seniors.

Sass Second - NPHS March News

It’s hard to believe we are just a few short weeks from the arrival of spring!  I’m more than happy to put my shovel and winter gear away! We have been busy at NPHS with testing, student activities, and scheduling for next year.  We completed the ISTEP+ Part One, and a huge shout out goes to the staff and students for creating a positive testing environment for all. ISTEP+ Part Two will take place April 17-20.   Students who did not test were given an opportunity to speak to NPHS alumni about life beyond high school. Also, we had a powerful activity and discussion on bullying and how to make NPHS a safer place for all.

Many of you may have noticed the NPHS Good News in your email inbox.  We will be sending this weekly to all parents and our local media. It’s a great way to highlight all the great things that go on every day at NPHS.

As you are aware, school threats and unsettling social media posts have become a daily reality.  We take every statement and/or post seriously and immediately engage our Student Resource Officer in the investigation.  We have engaged our students and staff in many discussions, practice drills, and frank conversations throughout the year.  Our students approach us with ideas, questions, and suggestions to make our school safer. Many students have communicated that they feel better and more empowered that we practice monthly and have conversations in all of our classrooms about how to remain safe.  On March 12, 2018, at 7:00 pm (CST), our district is having a school safety board work session at the middle school LGI room to publicly discuss additional steps that are being considered to enhance our district and building safety plan.

Another opportunity for our parents to keep our students safe from substance abuse is being offered for all LaPorte County Schools on March 20, 2018, at 6:30 pm (CST) at the LaPorte Civic to hear national expert Jermaine Galloway sharing proactive identification of substance abuse in his program called “High in Plain Sight.”  This is a free program.

A reminder to seniors:  You must be passing ALL graduation required courses on May 23, 2018, to participate in our graduation ceremony on June 3, 2018.  If a senior failed a graduation required course first semester, he/she was enrolled in the class again during 2nd semester. Some seniors have PLATO class requirements that must be completed as well.  It is very important that our seniors take advantage of in-school and out-of-school time to complete these requirements. We do not want them to miss out on our graduation ceremony. Seniors who have PLATO class requirements and are not progressing will be invited to after-school work sessions to complete the requirement(s).  Please don’t wait until it’s too late!

Summer School information is available for all students.  This is an excellent opportunity to make up credits to stay on track to graduate.  Summer School will run from May 30th until June 14th from 7:30-11:30 am (CST). The Summer School course offering and sign up sheet is available on our website and in our offices.   Please contact the office if you have any questions.

On March 27th, we will be having a Career Day for our students.  Students will be selecting three career interests and attend a session provided by someone working in the field.  This is another opportunity for our students to explore a career path.

Prom will be May 5th, and students must have 90% attendance to attend.  There are guest permission forms in the main office. Prom will be held at Heston Hills.

As always, join us at NPHS showcasing our students’ talents -- check out our calendar.  We are beginning our spring sports and still have lots of talent to showcase through our concerts, Talent Show, and more!
